This week for That's My Story and I'm Sticking To It I'll be telling you who I think the winners will be at Backlash.
Backlash will feature all three brands and I think this is defiantly a good decision considering some of the PPVs the past few months have been less then great when featuring Smackdown or ECW because those brands have less star power then Raw. It also helps eliminate pointless matches that would just add time to a show that cost $40 to watch. The Great American Bash and ECW December to Dismember are examples of when brand exclusive PPVs were terrible due to the lack of star power so featuring all three brands will improve the quality of the PPVs. It also makes the PPVs seem more important because there will be more title matches and it will feature the top talent from all three brands. With that being said let's get to some predictions of who the winners will be at Backlash.
The Women's title match is a tough one to be a winner but it should be an overall decent match. Mickie James probably has the most wrestling skill of the women wrestlers on Raw and she's really the only one that can carry the Women's division since Trish's departure a few months ago. Melina has been able to play a good heel and winning the Women's title has helped develop the heel character even more because instead of just interfering in matches she's been able to be a heel during matches too which adds to her heel character. Mick Foley made an appearance on Raw this past week and if Mick will be appearing on Raw more frequently it would be interesting to see a follow up to the Foley/Melina storyline from last year. I'll pick Mickie James to win the title and the reason being even though Melina has become a better heel with the title Mickie James would be a better champion because she has wrestling ability.
After the good technical wrestling match at Wrestlemania I'd expect Beniot and MVP to have another good match at Backlash. I picked MVP to win the title at Wrestlemania but Beniot retained the title. I'm going to pick MVP to win the title because as I mentioned before I think that the feud is being used to push MVP and winning the U.S. title could help give him a push. Until recently I didn't think MVP had much potential to be an established star on Smackdown but the feud with Beniot has really helped improve MVP's match so if MVP wins the title it will be interesting to see if he can become an established star on Smackdown.
I only have one question about the WWE tag title match...why aren't Flair and Carlito challenging for the titles? It seems as if there will eventually be a Flair/Carlito feud which would be great but why not have them challenge for the titles and then feud? Cade and Murdoch aren't terrible but they went from internet Velocity matches to getting a title shot in just a few weeks. I also don't understand why Flair and Carlito don't atleast have a match at the PPV considering that they are some of the most entertaining wrestlers in the WWE. As far as the tag match I think it's obvious that the Hardys are going to retain the titles because it seems like they will have a decent run as tag champions on Raw.
The Last Man Standing match should be an okay match and it's obvious that the Last Man Standing rules have been added to help cover up for the fact that Batista's in ring work isn't the best so weapons can help it be a better match. This is another match that it's obvious that the champion isn't going to lose the title. The Undertaker is a legend and at this point in his career The Undertaker doesn't have anything left to prove because he's had one of the longest runs in wrestling history. There are very few who have been able to accomplish what The Undertaker has accomplished and that's being able to get over with the crowd for over fifteen years. The Undertaker has been able to develop his character and The Undertaker's character has never been stale because The Undertaker has been able to develop his character. The Undertaker also has a very unique character and has been able to portray the character very well. The Undertaker also has the in ring ability to have good matches and he can still have good matches. The Undertaker will probably have the title for atleast a few months and I think that The Undertaker being the champion will improve Smackdown.
The ECW title match is ridiculous and as I mentioned in a column last week does Vince realize he's getting more T.V. time then the wrestlers? Raw started with another 20 minute segment involving McMahon but regardless of how much Vince promotes his own match the ECW title match will probably still be terrible. I'll pick Lashley to retain the title because the WWE is trying to push Lashley as a legitimate champion but I don't think Lashley is a legitimate champion.
The WWE title match is a tough one to pick a winner and it should be a good match. If you're reading this column then you're probably an internet wrestling fans and you've probably read the story about Orton being sent back from Europe for damaging a hotel room. Orton has alot of potential but at this point it seems like Orton won't become a major super star if he continues to act unprofessional. He might think that his last name gives him the right to act unprofessional but if he acts unprofessional he doesn't deserve to be a major star. Edge has the potential but I think the WWE ruined his credibility some what with the two weak titles reigns he had before dropping the title to Cena. It makes Edge seem like he's not a legitimate contender for the title and it makes him seem like a weak champion. The Cena/Micheals match that went an hour on Raw was a good match and it proved that Cena can wrestle. I'll pick Cena to win the match and it will be interesting to see who challenges for the title after the PPV.
Overall I think Backlash will be a good PPV.
Until next week
