Hello to all and welcome.
Every now and then I get to see a complete pay-per view via the internet. I find it much fairer to see every match on the card before I produce a review. I was lucky enough to see SummerSlam in its entity, and hear is my review on the show. I'll go through each match-up and my thoughts on them, and give them a rating out of 10.
The opening bout between bitter rivals MVP and Jeff Hardy:
This was a good solid match between two guys who could potentially hold the richest prize in the business. The action was very back and forth between the two, one of my favourites of the night.
I've got to say though, I'm not liking it when others keep interfering and screwing Jeff out of winning the match. The United States Champion Shelton Benjamin did just that, in my books repaying the favour MVP provided Shelton to retain his belt this past friday night. A strong opening to kick the night off, ending the match with MVP's drive-by kick on Jeff and giving him the win.
My rating out of 10: 8.5
The second match of the biggest blockbuster of the summer was the winner takes all match. After a hilarious segment backstage involving Santino, his ex girlfriend Maria and current girlfriend Beth Phoenix (and after a joke about Santino's unibrow) the team aptly named Glamarella got down to business. The match was very entertaining, Kofi is one of the most athletic superstars in the business today and we can only expect nothing but great things from him. He was the man of the match in my opinion, pulled off an amazing cross-body from the top rope, but unfortunately it wasn't enough for the jamaican sensation and the beautiful Mickie James to retain their titles and walk home the winners, after a comedic performance from Santino, jumping into the arms of the Glamazon no less when Kofi taunted jumping over the top rope but didn't, it was only a matter of time before that came back to haunt Kofi when he missed a move to the outside. After a perfectly executed ddt from Mickie on Santino, she sadly didn't see Beth coming to finish her off, and to gain both the intercontinental and womens championship in the process.
I give this entertaining and funny match: 8/10
Next up on the card was Matt Hardy challenging The Worlds Strongest Man Mark Henry for the ECW Championship. After a quick twist of fate to the near 400 pounder Hardy was only seconds away from reaching the top of the land of extreme, however Hall Of Famer Tony Atlas wasn't having it, and pulled Matt out of the ring, thus ending the match on a DQ on Henry. Matt won the match but not the gold, however we saw a reuinion for Matt and Jeff when they double suplexed Mark Henry on the outside of the ring.
Overall I give this match 5/10
We then saw the Straightedge Hardcore champ CM Punk defend his gold against the self-proclaimed wrestling god JBL, in what was a very backwards and forwards match. JBL took me by surprise and put up a hell of a fight against Punk, but Punk wasn't having any of it. After nailing JBL with the G.T.S. Punk retained the gold, and would be walking into his hometown the next night still WHC.
Overall I give this 8.9/10 JBL put in a solid performance, and Punk proved all the doubters wrong when he pinned JBL once again to retain the title.
Now its time to see The Game Triple H defend the WWE Championship against The Great Khali.
I, at first, wasn't really looking forward to this match before this past friday, but after seeing Trips topple the giant, I thought this could be a good match. It was sloppy in some places, but overall a good match-up with Triple H pedigreeing Khali and retaining the title.
Overall, I give this 7.8/10
Now for the first time ever, The Animal Batista vs The Dr. Of Thuganomics John Cena.
I thought this match was ok, but honestly it could've been a hell of a lot better. They should've really waited, like, hyped it up for a few months, have the two guys lead teams at Survivor Series, have one eliminate the other at Royal Rumble, then Wrestlemania 25....but no we got to see it 8 months early instead.
In some places they were sloppy, but in other places they were perfect. The mid-air batista bomb was exquizit, and with the submission moves Batista pulled out of the bag, they added a different pace to the match. Something I didn't expect Batista to do which took me surprise.
The end could've went either way, but in the end Batista pulled off the win.
Overall, this match gets 7.3/10. Could've been better, needed more hype. In the words of Stan Lee, nuff said.
Now its time for the main event...the return of The Deadman, The Phenom, The Undertaker to take on The Rated-R Superstar Edge in the devils playground, hell in a cell.
This match was simply incredible. It was everything I expected it to be, and so much more. We saw not one but two incredible spears pulled off by Edge, but in the words of the brilliant Slipknot you cannot kill what you did not create, and that was true as they weren't enough to silence the returning deadman. We even saw Taker execute a spear of his own.
To sum up this match, I'll use these words:
Brutal
Extreme
Awesome
Entertaining
Backwards and Forwards
The match of the night, and potentially match of the year.
Edge tried his damn hardest but the Deadman was to tough, and once again Edge ended up resting in peace courtesy of the Deadman.
We even saw Edge's former stable mates cheering the Deadman on.
However Edge's night wasn't over as Taker chokeslammed Edge from the ladder through the ring, and ultimately sending him to hell.
Highlights of the match:
Edge spearing Undertaker through the side of the cell
Edge spearing Undertaker through the announce table
Edge reversing the tombstone on the steel steps into the Edge-O-Matic onto the steel steps
Undertaker spearing Edge
Undertaker's con-chair-toe to Edge
Undertaker's chokeslam from the turnbuckle on Edge through two tables on the outside
And last but not least The beautiful chokeslam from the ladder on Edge through the ring.
10/10
