This week for That’s My Story and I’m Sticking To It I’ll be telling you what I think of Vince McMahon winning the ECW title.
It seems like it’s finally happened, it seems like ECW was officially taken off of life support and any trace of the original ECW died when Vince was declared the ECW champion, but is this situation as ridiculous as it appears? The answer is probably but depending on how the storyline develops it could lead to one of the more interesting things to happen in recent months in ECW. This might be a case of WWE realizing that as much as they try to push Lashley as the next major star he just doesn’t have the charisma to carry a brand at this point so Vince decided to make himself the champion. Now, don’t get me wrong here Vince being the ECW champion is without a doubt ridiculous but Vince being the ECW champion could make for a more interesting T.V. show then Lashley’s stale title reign.
Vince winning the title was defiantly a surprise but if you seen the ECW title match at Backlash you know that it’s no surprise that the match was terrible. It was so terrible in fact that during the match the discussion turned to how expensive mini bars are at hotels. When the fact that a can of Mountain Dew cost $3.75 at a mini bar at a hotel and talking about past vacations are more interesting then a title match you know the match was terrible. When Vince actually won the title it actually took me a second to realize that he won the title, because it just didn’t seem like Vince would actually think making himself the champion of ECW would help the brand and when his music was playing I asked “Did Vince just winning the ECW title”? As I mentioned this could lead to some interesting T.V. but this could also be Vince trying to prove that the WWE is a superior product and/or proving that Vince really does own wrestling and he could still get buy rates even though he’s the champion. I wouldn’t be surprised if this was Vince’s way of squashing ECW once and for all because two years ago when the original One Night Stand PPV was announced it could be argued that there was more fans talking about ECW then Raw or Smackdown. It could also be argued that the return of ECW had more fans talking about ECW then Raw or Smackdown. If it is Vince putting the final nail in the coffin of ECW then there’s probably a few more weeks of Vince being the champion but depending on how the Vince/originals feud develops it could help improve the ECW brand.
There was a four way dance this past week on the ECW T.V. show with the winner getting a shot at the title next week and for about five solid minutes it looked like the original ECW. I’ll be attending Smackdown at the Mellon Arena in Pittsburgh next week and it will be interesting to see Vince v.s. Rob Van Dam for the title but I doubt RVD will win the title. There’s always a chance RVD could win it as a way to keep him from leaving the WWE in a few months when his contract expires but I doubt he will win the title.
A side note to the Smackdown taping in Pittsburgh is that Batista v.s. The Undertaker for the World Heavy Weight tile has been added and with the recent news of The Undertaker needing surgery it seems all to obvious that Batista will leave Pittsburgh as the champion. I’m less then thrilled about having to see Batista win the title again and even though it’s probably not going to happen there’s always a chance Mr. Kennedy…Kennedy could cash in The Money in The Bank title shot. Even though it’s probably not going to happen I think Kennedy would be a better champion because Batista couldn’t carry the Smackdown brand before so I don’t know why he could carry the brand now. The Undertaker deserved a better title reign but injuries happen in pro wrestling and The Undertaker deserves another title run when he returns the ring.
Until next week
